2026-02-05 / Second Reading Debate: Institute of Real Estate Professionals Bill, Container Depot Operators Licensing Bill, and Licensing of Shipping Agents Amendment Bill - Member Contributions
Hon. Eranga Gunasekara
2026-02-05
Hon. Eranga Gunasekara made a brief closing argument in support of passing the Sri Lanka Real Estate Professionals' Institute Bill. He argued that the absence of regulatory oversight in the real estate sector enables mafias to operate and drives up housing and land prices, and that the proposed Institute would introduce professional standards, enable market interventions, and reduce jurisdictional conflicts with existing bodies through the Bill's amendments.
Please grant me one more minute, Hon. Deputy Chairperson of Committees.
We know that without firm regulation, mafias emerge; housing prices soar because there is no authoritative body to assess and guide. The same occurs in land. By establishing the Sri Lanka Real Estate Professionals’ Institute, we can make the necessary interventions, minimize conflicts with other related bodies through our amendments, uphold professionalism in the sector, and ensure the people benefit. I hope we will pass this Bill today. Thank you.
