2026-02-17 / Debate: Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill - Second Reading and Committee Stage

Hon. J.C. Alawathuwala

2026-02-17

The speaker, drawing on his personal experience as a member since 1994, argued against the proposed pension cuts, stating he speaks on behalf of those who would be adversely affected. He urged the government to instead honour its commitment to address pension anomalies affecting approximately 600,000 retired public servants, rather than reducing benefits for a smaller group.

I have served more than ten years; I came in 1994. I am not speaking for myself. I am speaking for the many who will face injustice under this. Instead of cutting off these few pensions, fulfil your promise to correct the anomalies affecting the six hundred thousand retired public servants. Thank you.
