The Hon. (Ms.) Ambika Samivel

2026-02-18

The Hon. (Ms.) Ambika Samivel submitted Written Question No. 1466/2025 to the Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure concerning the safety and welfare of plantation workers. The question addresses two distinct concerns: first, the physical hazards faced by plantation workers, including wild animal attacks, snake and wasp bites, and chemical exposure, requesting details on complaints received over the past five years and measures taken to mitigate these risks. Second, it raises the issue of workplace harassment — verbal, physical, or otherwise — by employers, and seeks clarification on whether legal action has been or will be taken to address such conduct.

Question No. 1466/2025 to the Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure: (a) Will he inform this House: (i) whether he is aware that plantation workers are vulnerable to wild animal attacks, snake and wasp bites, and chemical hazards; (ii) whether complaints have been received regarding such incidents; (iii) if so, the number of complaints received in the last five years, separately; and (iv) the measures that have been taken to ensure the safety of the employees from the said hazards? (b) Will he also inform this House: (i) whether he is aware that plantation workers are subjected to verbal, physical or other forms of harassment by employers at work; (ii) whether any legal action has been taken to prevent such harassment; and (iii) if not, whether legal action will be taken in this regard in the future? (c) If not, why?
