Hon. Ajith Gihan posed a written question to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism regarding the underdevelopment of tourism in the Puttalam District. The member highlighted that tourist attractions in Sri Lanka are concentrated in only a few regions and that no programme has been established to develop Puttalam's tourism potential. He requested information on which tourist destinations have been identified in the district and what steps the government intends to take to develop the area as a tourist destination.
asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism:
(a) Is he aware that -
(i) tourist attractions are currently concentrated within only a few geographical regions of the country; and
(ii) no programme has thus far been established to develop the Puttalam District, which has great potential for the tourism industry, as a tourist destination?
(b) Will he inform this House the -
(i) tourist destinations that have been identified to develop the tourism industry in the Puttalam District; and
(ii) steps that will be taken for the purpose referred to above?
(c) If not, why?
