Hon. Ananda Wijepala

2026-02-20

Hon. Ananda Wijepala, speaking in his capacity as Minister of Public Security, responded to the Leader of the Opposition's offer of support on law enforcement matters. He stated that arrests are made on the basis of analyzed intelligence, including phone records linking criminals to political figures, and cautioned against nominating individuals with criminal connections within political movements. Regarding a query on Public Security Committees, he acknowledged he had checked with the Senior DIG and committed to rechecking and reporting back responsibly. He called for cross-party unity in combating the underworld and narcotics trafficking, while noting that some information could not be disclosed publicly to avoid prejudicing ongoing investigations.

Mr. Deputy Speaker, the Hon. Leader of the Opposition said he would support us. We have analyzed, through phone records, dealings between criminals and those closest to them in political movements. If needed, I can brief you. We do not arrest people merely on raw intelligence. I mentioned this because you said you would support us. When nominations are given within political movements, it is wrong to nominate persons who have direct links with criminals and then appoint them. Please do not now shift to another point after saying you would support us. On your query about the Public Security Committees, I said I will inquire again. I first checked and the Senior DIG informed me that, without his knowledge, no one has been summoned to the CID on this matter. I will recheck and inform you. As Minister of Public Security, I answer responsibly. We present information and analysis without causing prejudice. You said you would give assistance for this; there are various ways. Every party, including yours, can help. The underworld and the narcotics menace are a serious threat. Everyone must unite against them. There can be no “Opposition” to narcotics trafficking or the underworld; the entire country must unite. I suggested a way you could assist. We appreciate the support you give. The questions you ask also give us an opportunity to inform the public. While some disclosures may hamper investigations, we are ready to present what we can for your information. I responded because you asked. We do have a great deal of information, but I do not intend to lay all of it before the House now.
