2026-03-03 / Oral Question: Norochcholai Thermal Power Plant (Q.68/2025)

Hon. Kumara Jayakody

2026-03-03

Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody assured Parliament that coal-based power generation is proceeding without reduction and that petroleum supplies face no delays, with all Ceylon Petroleum Corporation storage tanks filled to capacity. He announced that nine new storage tanks are under construction, with foundations already laid under the current government. The Minister acknowledged that global conflicts are beyond the government's control but pledged to safeguard the country's energy security, while implicitly criticising predecessors for failing to plan adequately.

Hon. Speaker, we have made all arrangements to ensure generation using coal without any reduction. There is no hindrance or delay in petroleum supplies either. We are managing with the capacities of the storage tanks already built; all tanks of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation have been filled to the maximum. We are also constructing nine new tanks—foundation stones have been laid and work has commenced under this Government. Those who failed to plan for tomorrow now raise questions today. We are managing and moving forward, and I assure you we will act to prevent such a situation. We cannot control a global war, but we will do our utmost to ensure this country’s energy security.
