Hon. Sunil Rathnasiri acknowledged a recent restoration of public confidence in the Police Department following a period of approximately 16 months marked by widespread irregularities. He raised concerns about inadequate residential facilities for police officers relocated during annual transfers, particularly in urban areas. His supplementary question asked whether a programme exists to provide sufficient housing for officers posted to new stations through the annual transfer process.
Mr. Speaker, for about one year and four months the public’s trust in our Police Department had significantly eroded, especially due to widespread irregularities. However, now the Police have won back public confidence because of their exemplary service.
At present, annual transfers are being implemented and officers are being posted to new stations. Many complain, particularly in urban centres, that adequate residential facilities are not available. My first supplementary: Is there a programme to provide sufficient residential facilities for officers who arrive at new stations on annual transfer?
