Hon. Riyas Farook raised a matter of parliamentary privilege, reporting that W.G. Chaminda Thilakaratne, Vice Chairman of the Akurana Pradeshiya Sabha, publicly threatened to physically assault him during a Pradeshiya Sabha general meeting on 13 January 2026. The threat allegedly arose in response to a statement Farook had made in Parliament on 09 January 2026. He called for an immediate inquiry and appropriate action to safeguard Members' parliamentary privileges and personal safety.
Hon. Speaker, I wish to raise a matter of privilege and a threat made against me.
Following a statement I made in Parliament on 09 January 2026, the Vice Chairman of the Akurana Pradeshiya Sabha, Mr. W.G. Chaminda Thilakaratne, publicly threatened on 13 January 2026, during the Pradeshiya Sabha’s general meeting, to physically assault me. This is a serious threat to my freedom of speech in Parliament and to my safety.
I kindly request an immediate inquiry and appropriate action to protect Members’ parliamentary privileges. Thank you.
